Description

Set off to discover the Valley of the Sugar Mills and learn more about Cuban history!

The Valle de los Ingenios (or the "Valley of the Sugar Mills" in English), located to the east of Trinidad, was at the heart of Cuba's sugar industry in the 19th century. Along with the city of Trinidad, the valley has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988. At its peak, it had 75 sugar mills where over 10,000 slaves worked.

Your guide will accompany you around this valley dotted with haciendas, slave houses and around 75 ruined mills. You'll start with those at San Isidro de los destiladeros dating from 1830, which will allow you to learn more about how a sugar mill worked at the time. These ruins are considered by specialists to be the most complete sugar complex in the Valley from the time.

You will then head to the typical village of Manacas Iznaga, set in the middle of a lush green landscape. You can visit the estate and its various buildings to learn more about the lives of the slaves and their work in the sugar mills. If you wish, you can climb to the top of the Torre de Manaca Iznaga (ticket not included in the price), which is 45 metres high and offers views of the surrounding countryside and mountains in the distance.

During your excursion to the Valle de los Ingenios, you will also have the opportunity to visit a ceramics workshop.
