Learn samurai swordsmanship and discover the discipline of Kenbu!
Kenbu is a type of martial arts dance practised by the samurai. This traditional practice combines graceful movements, combined with swordplay precision and agility. It's a vital element of Japanese martial arts culture. Today, Kenbu is used to visually re-enact battles and other combative events, while commemorating the spirit and passion of the Japanese samurai through performances and shows.
As part of this group activity, you'll have the chance to learn more about the age-old traditions and techniques of the samurai and try your hand at dancing, swordsmanship and fanning. Your course will take place in Kyoto's Kembu Samurai Theatre, where numerous artists perform and share their knowledge and experience with fans of this discipline.
Three packages are available:
- A one-hour package where you can try swordsmanship while wearing traditional samurai attire. Thanks to your English-speaking instructor, you'll learn the rudiments of swordsmanship and learn more about the principles of the samurai.
- The second package lasts an hour and a half,and you'll learn about Kenbu in greater depth: you'll learn the Kenbu dance and the basics of swordsmanship while wearing traditional samurai attire. You can also try the traditional Japanese fan dance if you like. The class ends with you putting your learning into practice: you'll be able to perform the choreography you've learned with the rest of your group.
- The third package also lasts an hour and a half, and is dedicated to learning about the history of and how to handle the Japanese fan . You'll be able to wear the traditional costume and learn all about the dexterity required to perform this graceful and precise art.
These classes are suited to all levels, and the swords and fans used are not at all dangerous. Children aged 5 and over can take part in this fun and fascinating cultural activity!
