Discover Japanese cuisine and learn how to cook the iconic dishes served in izakayas!
Izakaya are a key part of Japanese culture in terms of cuisine and social lives. Although there isn't an exact equivalent outside Japan, izakayas are like bistros or tapas bars, where you can enjoy alcoholic drinks and have a quick bite. They're social places where colleagues and friends often meet for a drink after work although people do spend the whole day there.
Izakayas are basically bars, but they also serve a range of Japanese dishes that patrons share, just like you would tapas. If you visit an izakaya, you'll be able to sample specialities from all over Japan in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
For this introduction to Japanese cuisine, you'll head to downtown Kyoto.
Assisted by an English-speaking Japanese expert, you'll not only cook several iconic dishes that are served in izakaya, but also learn the basics of Japanese cuisine, its essential ingredients and seasoning.
The course will take place in two parts: to begin with, you'll prepare and taste two or three dishes. You'll then return to the kitchen to prepare other dishes.
Dishes you'll learn to cook include:
- Cucumber salad
- Chicken and burdock dumplings
- Pumpkin soup with white miso and soya milk
- Fried chicken with shiso and salted plum
- Japanese-style pasta with beef and dashi
- Hojicha green tea sorbet
