Description

Take a unique private guided tour of Kyoto while wearing a kimono, and enjoy a private dinner accompanied by a performance by a Maiko (apprentice geisha)!

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kyoto in the early afternoon after which you'll take public transport to the kimono hire shop, where you'll be dressed in a kimono that you can wear until the end of the activity.

Once dressed in these traditional garments, your guide will take you on a tour of the city's must-see sights, starting with Nishiki market, considered to be "Kyoto's kitchen" for over 400 years. During your visit, you'll be able to sample several local dishes.

You'll then head for Gion, the historic district where geishas live: you'll stroll along the famous Hanamikoji street and be able to admire the Yasaka-jinja shrine's ancient architecture. This district traces the history of geishas (also known as geiko) in Kyoto, women who are specialists in traditional Japanese arts, whose purpose was to entertain high society.

After soaking up this rich past and learning more about the history and symbolism that geishas represent in Japan, you'll have the chance to meet a maiko, a geisha apprentice, and watch her perform during your dinner. Dinner will take place in a private room, and you'll enjoy a typical traditional Kyoto meal typical: a kaiseki dinner, made up of different courses featuring local and seasonal produce, all prepared according to the rules of Japanese culinary art.

Your English-speaking guide will translate for you during the meal: you can ask the maiko questions, and she'll tell you about her way of life. Following this chat, the young geisha apprentice will perform two traditional dances, as was the custom during formal dinners in old Japan.
After the private dinner and show, you'll get to play traditional games called ozashiki-asobi with the maiko. You'll also be allowed to take photos.

At the end of the dinner, your guide will take you back to your hotel. Once back at base, you'll need to hand your kimono in at the hotel's reception desk.
