Description

Learn about the history of Hiroshima and visit the Miyajima sanctuary with this excursion that departs from Osaka or Kyoto!

Hiroshima is known for its sorry past; during WW2, it was hit by the Americans' first atomic bomb. However, the city has since been rebuilt and is now one of Japan's most popular destinations.

An assistant will meet you at Kyoto or Shin-Osaka station (depending on which one you choose) and help you board the high-speed Shinkansen train to Hiroshima (the journey is unaccompanied). After 1hr 30 - 1hr 45 mins, you'll arrive at Hiroshima station, where you'll meet up with your guide and the rest of the group, and head off on a coach tour of Hiroshima.

The tour starts with a visit to Peace Memorial Park. Located in the city centre, this park has several monuments commemorating the victims of the atomic bombing on 6 August 1945. It aims to promote world peace and combat the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
At the heart of the park is the A-bomb dome (or Genbaku dome), one of the few ruins close to the hypocentre that survived the bombing. You'll also visit the Peace Memorial Museum, where you'll learn more about the horrors of nuclear war.

After this emotionally-charged visit, you'll pause for lunch and try the local speciality, okonomiyaki, a kind of savoury pancake cooked on a hot plate in front of you, and made with cabbage, meat, noodles and other vegetables.

In the afternoon, you'll take the ferry to Miyajima, a small island 10 minutes off the coast of Hiroshima. The island is famous for being home to the Itsukushima-jinja shrine and its stilted torii gate, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You'll visit the shrine and can admire the large vermilion-red portico, which seems to float in the middle of the sea. You'll also visit the impressive nearby Senjokaku Shrine pagoda.
The visit to Miyajima will end with an hour of free time in the Omotesando shopping street, where you can stock up on souvenirs or sample local dishes.

At the end of the day, you'll catch the ferry back to Hiroshima and be driven to the station. You'll then catch the train back to Osaka or Kyoto.
